1. Engine Oil Level

2. Coolant Level

3. Brake Fluid

Check the brake fluid reservoir. Low brake fluid indicates either a leak (which requires workshop attention before travel) or heavily worn brake pads. Either condition should be addressed before a long journey.

4. Power Steering Fluid

Check the power steering reservoir if your vehicle has hydraulic power steering. Low fluid causes heavy steering and, if severe, pump damage.

5. Windscreen Washer Fluid

6. Tyre Pressure — All Four Wheels

7. Tyre Condition

11. Brakes

Before departing, perform a controlled stop from 50 km/h in a safe location. The vehicle should stop in a straight line with firm pedal feel and no pulling to one side. Any abnormality warrants investigation before departure.

12. Steering

With the vehicle stationary, move the steering wheel gently left and right. There should be minimal free play before the wheels begin to respond. Excessive free play indicates steering system wear requiring attention.

13. Under the Vehicle

Briefly walk around and look underneath the vehicle for any obvious fluid drips — oil, coolant, brake fluid, or fuel. Any fresh drip warrants investigation before a long journey.

14. Spare Tyre, Jack, and Wheel Brace

Confirm the spare tyre is present, inflated, and that the jack and wheel brace are in the vehicle. Confirm you know how to use them — a jack that has not been used for years may be seized or incorrectly stored.

15. Fuel
