How to Check Your Car Before a Long Journey in Malawi: A 15-Point Safety Checklist

How to Check Your Car Before a Long Journey in Malawi: A 15-Point Safety Checklist

The Ultimate Pre-Trip Routine for Stress-Free Travel Across the Warm Heart.

META: A complete pre-journey vehicle check for Malawian drivers travelling between cities or into rural areas where breakdown assistance is unavailable. | KEYWORDS: car check before journey Malawi, vehicle check Malawi travel, road trip car inspection Malawi, safe driving Malawi, pre-journey checklist Malawi

A long journey in Malawi carries risks that do not exist in countries with dense breakdown coverage and reliable mobile networks. Remote stretches between Lilongwe and Mzuzu, between Blantyre and Zomba, or into rural districts can leave a stranded driver hours from any mechanical assistance. A thorough pre-journey check takes 20 minutes and eliminates the vast majority of preventable breakdown risks.

The 15-Point Pre-Journey Check

1. Engine Oil Level

Check with the dipstick, engine cold. Oil should be between minimum and maximum marks. If below minimum, top up to the correct grade before departure. Do not travel with low oil.

2. Coolant Level

Check the coolant reservoir level, not the radiator cap — opening a hot radiator is dangerous. Level should be between minimum and maximum. Low coolant on a long journey risks overheating, which can cause catastrophic and expensive engine damage.

3. Brake Fluid

Check the brake fluid reservoir. Low brake fluid indicates either a leak (which requires workshop attention before travel) or heavily worn brake pads. Either condition should be addressed before a long journey.

4. Power Steering Fluid

Check the power steering reservoir if your vehicle has hydraulic power steering. Low fluid causes heavy steering and, if severe, pump damage.

5. Windscreen Washer Fluid

Trivial until you are driving into a setting sun on a dusty road with a smeared windscreen and no washer fluid. Fill before departure.

6. Tyre Pressure — All Four Wheels

Check against the manufacturer specification found in the driver's door jamb or owner's manual. Include the spare. An underinflated spare tyre is a specific frustration that a 60-second check prevents entirely.

7. Tyre Condition

Walk around the vehicle and visually inspect all four tyres for obvious damage, sidewall bulges, or embedded objects. Check tread depth — if you cannot see the tread wear indicators across the full tread width, replacement is overdue.

8. Lights — All Functions

Check headlights, tail lights, brake lights, indicators, and hazard lights. A non-functioning brake light on Malawian roads, where following distances are often inadequate, is a significant accident risk.

9. Windscreen and Wipers

Inspect the windscreen for cracks that may propagate under vibration. Check wiper blade condition and ensure washers function. Malawi's sudden heavy rains make functional wipers essential.

10. Battery

Check battery terminal security and cleanliness. A loose terminal can cause electrical failure at the worst time. If your battery is more than two years old, consider having it load-tested before a long journey.

11. Brakes

Before departing, perform a controlled stop from 50 km/h in a safe location. The vehicle should stop in a straight line with firm pedal feel and no pulling to one side. Any abnormality warrants investigation before departure.

12. Steering

With the vehicle stationary, move the steering wheel gently left and right. There should be minimal free play before the wheels begin to respond. Excessive free play indicates steering system wear requiring attention.

13. Under the Vehicle

Briefly walk around and look underneath the vehicle for any obvious fluid drips — oil, coolant, brake fluid, or fuel. Any fresh drip warrants investigation before a long journey.

14. Spare Tyre, Jack, and Wheel Brace

Confirm the spare tyre is present, inflated, and that the jack and wheel brace are in the vehicle. Confirm you know how to use them — a jack that has not been used for years may be seized or incorrectly stored.

15. Fuel

Fill the tank, not just to the point of departure. Between Lilongwe and Mzuzu, between Blantyre and rural districts, fuel availability can be inconsistent. Carry a verified sealed fuel can for very remote travel.
