Transport Business Profitability Guide for Malawi: Revenue, Costs, and What the Numbers Actually Mean

Maximize your transport margins with this practical guide to calculating route and vehicle profitability for logistics businesses in Malawi.

META: A step-by-step guide to changing engine oil on a vehicle in Malawi, with guidance on the correct oil grade and interval for Malawian conditions. | KEYWORDS: how to change engine oil Malawi, engine oil change DIY Malawi, oil change guide Malawi, change car oil Malawi, engine oil service

Changing your own engine oil is the most accessible vehicle maintenance task available to any Malawian driver with basic mechanical aptitude. Done correctly, it saves workshop labour costs, ensures the right oil grade is used, and gives you direct visibility into your engine's condition through what the drained oil tells you. This guide covers the complete process.

What You Need

• Correct engine oil for your vehicle specification (check your owner's manual — typically 15W-40 mineral or 10W-40 semi-synthetic for Malawian conditions)

• Correct oil filter for your engine (confirm with a parts supplier using your vehicle make, model, and year)

• Oil drain plug washer (replace every oil change to ensure a leak-free seal)

• Oil drain pan or container with adequate capacity

• Correct socket or spanner for your drain plug

• Oil filter removal tool if the filter is inaccessible by hand

• Clean rags and gloves

The Oil Change Process

Step 1: Warm the Engine

Run the engine for 3 to 5 minutes before draining. Warm oil flows more completely than cold oil, carrying more contaminants with it when drained. Do not drain immediately after extended running — hot oil can cause burns.

Step 2: Locate and Remove the Drain Plug

Position the drain pan under the engine sump drain plug. Remove the plug carefully — oil will flow immediately. Allow the oil to drain fully, typically 5 to 10 minutes.

Step 3: Remove the Oil Filter

With the drain plug removed, remove the oil filter. Some oil will drain from the filter as it is removed — expect this. Wipe the filter mounting surface clean.

Step 4: Install the New Filter

Apply a thin film of clean new oil to the new filter's rubber gasket. Install the filter hand-tight only — do not use a tool to tighten. Over-tightening an oil filter compresses and damages the gasket.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug

Install the new drain plug washer. Reinstall the drain plug and tighten to the correct torque — typically 25 to 35 Nm. Over-tightening strips the sump threads; under-tightening allows oil to weep.

Step 6: Fill with New Oil

Pour the correct quantity of new oil through the oil filler cap. Check your owner's manual for the correct capacity — typically 4 to 6 litres for a four-cylinder engine. Fill to halfway between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick, not to the maximum.

Step 7: Run and Check

Start the engine and idle for 2 minutes. Check under the vehicle for any drips at the drain plug or filter. Check the oil level on the dipstick after shutdown. The oil level will have dropped slightly as oil has circulated into the filter and galleries — top up if below midpoint.

What the Drained Oil Tells You

• Black, thick oil: normal for a long interval change — this is what the filter and oil were removing from your engine

• Grey or milky oil: coolant contamination — investigate head gasket or cooling system immediately

• Metal particles visible in the drain pan: internal engine wear requiring workshop investigation

• Water in the oil (bubbles when drained): condensation from short-trip use, or cooling system leak requiring investigation
